Beginning his career with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) in 2007, James Lewan has been involved in a broad range of structural engineering investigations and evaluations involving a variety of materials and building types. Mr. Lewan has performed evaluations of brick, terra cotta, stone masonry, concrete, steel, heavy timber, and glass structures. Mr. Lewan has assessed the causes of collapse, damage, and distress in existing structures; designed repair and rehabilitation details and overseen the implementation of these details during construction; and performed numerous structural analyses on a variety of structures and framing systems. Mr. Lewan has also performed these tasks on many nationally and locally designated historic structures and landmarks. Mr. Lewan has significant experience with structural analysis computer software programs and has developed an expertise in finite element analysis. He has developed experience in modeling steel structures to determine the cause(s) of collapse in several high-profile failure investigations. Mr. Lewan started J28 LLC (J28) in 2025 with the intent of adding new structural design services to the forensic work he performed at WJE.
